Why You Should Care: SMBs can go digital with scanning and imaging products from Neat.
The Lowdown: Whether you're drowning in paper or want to save trees, Neat Technology Group is there to help. As Jeff Thomas, vice president of sales put it, "We offer scanning solutions for content that is trapped in paper."
The company started out as NeatReceipts and based its concept around the idea that there had to be an easier way for businesses to process expense reports rather than to sort through stacks of crumpled coffee-stained receipts.
Customers who use the company's flagship product, NeatReceipts, scan in receipts, business cards and documents. Neat's technology then identifies and extracts the data which is then automatically organized.

NeatReceipts is sold primarily through outlets such as Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot and Amazon as well as at Neat airport kiosks. Other products from the company that are sold in the retail channel include NeatDesk, a desktop scanner and digital filing system.
In 2008, the company shifted away from a retail-heavy strategy and branched out into the reseller sector. Based on customer feedback Neat realized that there was a need for its products on a larger scale and began building two offerings specifically for the channel: NeatScan and NeatScan To Office, which combines both software and hardware.
"We had significant customer interest in our technology, but we had the wrong product mix," Thomas said. We wanted to get into the channel, but the nature of our consumer products were difficult to implement for business customers, so we created these products which are only available through the channel."
NeatScan To Office combines hardware and software: a mobile scanner with the company's software that lets customers capture information. The software is installed as a toolbar and lets users save information to Microsoft Office applications. Receipts are input to Excel expense reports, business cards into Outlook contacts and text and images into Word documents and PowerPoint presentations. Additionally, the product creates searchable PDFs from any Office application with a Scan To PDF feature.
Neat is looking to add another 35 partners over the next six months, and doesn't want to go too big too fast. "We want to expand slowly and then offer other capabilities in news products," Thomas said.
Towards that end, Neat is now on the GSA Schedule and is beginning to look for government bids. Thomas said the company is specifically looking for partners in this area.
